I just removed the side seam marker. I am one quarter finished on the hem trim and it felt as if it took no time at all. It's the kind of thing where you can really get deep into the rhythm and simply lose yourself. Knit, slip, knit a bit more, purl two together and so on. I was so certain that the whole post today was going to be about how much fun this project is, but this post is about something else entirely.
Socks. This post is about socks.
Last night when I went to bed, things fell off my dresser, one of them being my long handled shoe horn, and when I picked stuff up, I used my shoe horn to slip inside my socks to push the sock off my heel. Only the shoe horn when right through the sock. It was so disconcerting that I repeated the move again, to push my sock off and it happened again. The third time, my brain finally kicked in and I realized there must be a massive hole.
I looked at the other heel and it too was worn thin over a very large area. If you catch it in time, you can just do a duplicate stitch over the area for a quick fix, and that could have worked on the second sock, but this one was too far gone to repair. There was a large thin area around the hole and a patch would never have stayed stable.
After that I took a good look at other sock in my drawer. There are a few socks needing second repairs and a few more that need first repairs. The ones showing the littlest wear are the ones made of Patons Kroy yarn, where the heels are made with the yarn held doubled.
This morning finds me digging in the sock WIPs to see where I stand on socks.
And that is the story of my morning. Socks. Everywhere, socks.
